Christmas Tour of Homes 2009

Today is the Christmas Tour of Homes and this year it is being hosted by the Nesting Place. I’ve been checking out some of the links and I am stunned at how creative and beautiful some of the homes are. I think the key is to keep in mind the motto that the Nester give us “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.”

Christmas Tour of Homes with The Nester
First, I would like to thank my friends Jason and Jenifer for helping me decorate this year for Christmas. It means a great deal to me and I know our children.

Welcome to our home! Often a wreck but full of love!

Our Christmas Village is featured this year in the foyer.
I have more houses but not enough room to display them all.
Plus I have lots of little hands and interested people wanting to look at all of them!

I am missing baking this year. I love to be in the kitchen during the holidays but I have yet to get in there due to my surgery. I normally decorate my whole kitchen but right now I only have one counter decorated for the holidays. Whenever I see it, I smile. I love my Snowman!

I adore the wreath my friends and I made a few years ago. Each year balls come off and have to be replaced but in some ways its nice because that means each year it is a little different. One day I will work on a tutorial about how to make your own ball wreath.

And here is the mantle! I love it and when it is all lit up it is stunning to look at.
Unfortunately I could not get a good picture of all 26 candles lit, but you can imagine, right?

Last but not least my Christmas tree. Which has been not nice about staying fully lit. I will not buy a pre-lit tree again for this very reason.

Thank you so much for dropping by!

Crafty Goodness: Home Fall Decorations

I love autumn and the last few days here on the Gulf Coast it has actually felt like fall. In fact my favorite month of the year is October, followed closely by November. I love the cool crisp air, clear star lit nights, and watching the trees change color. I also love all the different kinds of fall foods. Autumn puts me in a baking mood, and I love to bake breads, make pies, and cook chili.

This is my front door to welcome our friends and family into our house. I don’t particularly like how the wreath is hung on the door and I am looking for a different way to hang it. My friend Jason made my wreath. I think he did a fantastic job!

Here is the fall arrangement in my foyer area. I did this one and used an old tea pot as a vase. The handle is broken but most people do not notice it. I also have a fall village that sits on the table.

One of my favorite things that I own is my fall village. It hasn’t been often in the last decade that I have been able to put it this low to the ground where little hands could get at it.

This is the fall arrangement on my coffee table. My friend Jason also did it. It is done in an antique soup tureen. I bought the Halloween plate for $5 at TJ Maxx. I have on orange depression glass bowl from the dead people also sitting on the table.

This is my arrangement inspired by the Nesting Place. I bought this pumpkin at Hobby Lobby several weeks ago. I just loved it. I wanted the bigger one but I’m on a pretty tight budget these days. I did get it for half off. The rocks I already had and the candle. I found the plate also at TJ Maxx for $6. I really enjoy looking at this arrangement, especially when the candle is lit. For one, there is nothing that gray blue color in my living toom so it really stands out on the dead people end table.

Here is a close up of one part of the mantle. Also inspired by the Nesting Place. I already had the berry garland and the candle holders. My friend Jason fixed up the glass cylinder with left overs from some of the other arrangements. I bought the pumpkins at Hobby Lobby for $3 and $5.

I had a naked table in the living room and decided to pull things from other parts of the house to dress it up. The lamp was a steal. I found the lamp at Hobby Lobby in their clearance section. It was 80% off. I paid $16 for it. The base is cracked but not noticeable. I have it sitting on top some old books. The other things normally sit on my mantle.

I just wanted to show off my fall decorating on a budget.

And here I go…

I’m a bit a nervous. Four years ago I closed down my cottage business, Whimsical Wears. In August of 2004 a huge pine tree fell through the middle of my house causing extensive damage to our home. In fact, we were the only house in our neighborhood to get damaged during Hurricane Ivan. For two weeks after the hurricane had come through I could not work. At that time I had $12000 in outstanding orders. $12000. During that two week period of time I realized something. I was working way too much. In fact I was working seven days a week and about 80 hours a week. Keep in mind I had three children at this time. I decided I would cut back and take some time off once I got back to work again.

However, going back to work after the tree fell through my house was difficult. Many of my suppliers were in Florida and they had been hit by multiple hurricanes and things were difficult to get. My grandfather also became very ill at this time and died a few weeks after Hurricane Ivan passed through. I was being stretched thin and there were not enough hours in the day. Luckily I did have three great women who worked for me. I could not have done it without them. I was humbled by my circumstances and realized that my business and not my family had become first in my life.

Then I found out I was pregnant and that was like the nail in the coffin to my working. I decided to close up shop. I refunded 60% of my current orders. I lost a lot of money because of my investment into fabrics and notions. I pissed off a lot of people. I had been talking with an agent, and with a baby magazine to feature my products. I wrote them all telling them I was through. It was the best decision I ever made, but I will not lie, I missed it. I missed the creative side of it, and I missed the customers.

I have bins and bins of fabric. Some from those orders never completed and some I’ve bought since then because I am such a fabric whore. For the past four years I have sewn only for family and friends until this week. I decided a couple of weeks ago that I needed to bring in some extra money. I am tired of living pay check to pay check. Things are always cropping up with five kids, like medications, doctor visits, new shoes, or braces. It is always something and with the current state of the economy every little bit will help. Working outside the home is just not feasible so I have decided to once again use the talents the good Lord gave me.

Please go check out my new Etsy store, Southern Monkey Designs. Yes, the monkey, Chelsea, is my marketing tool. I’m limiting how much I work per day. I really do not have a choice since there are now five children, three that are currently homeschooled and two little ones that keep me on my toes. I would appreciate any feedback, good or bad, because I haven’t done this in awhile and I have never sold on Etsy before. Need a baby gift or something beautiful for your own little monkeys? I’ll be listing stuff on a regular basis and your support is greatly appreciated.

Here are a few things that are available:

Monkey and Child are not for sell, but those cute Amy Butler Temple Flower baby blocks are!

And so is this banner that matches the blocks.

Crafty Creative Goodness: Neapolitan Monkey Themed Birthday Party

Back in April I started planning Katie Rose’s birthday party. She wanted it to be pink and she wanted monkeys. I posted this back on April 30 as a spring board for ideas for her party. Yesterday was the party and I was really happy with how it turned out.

I was able to do this party pretty inexpensively and used a lot of things I already had around the house.

Our most expensive splurge was on the hat from Silver Spoon Scraps. It is even more adorable in person and on than what you see in the pictures. The cake I got from our local Super Target for $9.99, and I used the same cake plate from Kara’s birthday party to set it on.

The birthday banner I made after reading several different tutorials. I used left over fabric from other projects I had worked on, ribbon was used instead of bias tape, and the letters were all hand painted rather than appliqued. The monkey head in the background was a place mat that I got last year at Target to make a diaper bag with.

I bought a dozen balloons, crepe paper, and some curling ribbon to decorate with plus the plates, napkins, and cups all for under $20. I already had the monkey cookie jar that I used on the coffee table with the kids party favors and the puppet craft we did as our activity. The cake was purchased at the Super Target for $9.99 which I thought was a real bargain and I used the same cake plate that I used for Kara’s birthday party back in the spring.

Katie is wearing a smocked angel sleeve dress that I got from Ragsland for free when I hosted a trunk show at my house back in February. We also have the matching bow, but we took her bow off so she could wear her beautiful birthday hat. I also purchased the necklace from TooTooPosh on Etsy which everyone thought was so adorable.

Besides the six little girls at the party you can also see that we had monkeys attending as well. It wouldn’t have been a monkey party without Chi Chi and Chelsea! (and Kelsey too)

Girly Sock Monkey Birthday Ideas

The other night Katie Rose told me that she wanted a “pink monkey birthday party”. Her birthday is in eight weeks and I was trying to think of something fun but small to have here at the house with a few other little girls around her age we know. So after she told me what she wanted I began to look around to get ideas and started creating me a palette to work from. I found such adorable items and ideas I just had to share!

Isn’t the sock monkey just adorable? She is not available for sale but you can visit Treasures Under the Willow Tree for other handmade sock monkeys and other plush items. We will definitely have to have a pink sock monkey at the birthday party as a special guest.

I came across a variety of invitations, but the one from lil’duckduck was a favorite.

No party is complete without a cake and this one by D’Pasteles Cake Shop in San Antonio, Texas is absolutely adorable. Their cakes are inspiring!

You also need decorations for a birthday party and this banner from Silver Spoon Scraps is one that can be used again and again. You can also make your own banner from fabric scraps. Check out this tutorial over at Vanilla Joy. The sock monkey birthday hat is also made by Silver Spoon Scraps and I will definitely be purchasing one. Even in all my crafty goodness I do not think I could create something so freaking cute!

Lastly, my little princess will not be complete without some bling to go around her neck from TooTooPosh on Etsy. Surprisingly very affordable and absolutely adorable Too Too Posh has a wide selection of little girl accessories.
